We live in Paradise!

There are such beautiful parks on this island.  I explored two really great ones last week when my mom was visiting.  Both had nice water access for swimming this summer which we're going to take full advantage of.
But today, I took Jamie to school and went for a walk around the trails that I had seen from the road near their playground.  I was shocked to find that this is surrounding their school:
Is that a suspension bridge!?!?
Why, yes it is!
 Breathtaking ravine!
 Thick ferns covered the ravine.
This bird was busy building a nest.  The fluff he had gathered made him look like he had a beard.  He let me get close and kept hopping down the trail like he was taking me somewhere.
Not sure what kind of berries (salmonberries?) these were but this is where the bird left me standing.  Either he was showing me something cool or trying to poison me.
Here's my bird friend again on the way back.

BEST DAY EVER!!

We all got up early this morning to be at a church gig at 7:30am.  Two 1.5 hour services with a yummy potluck brunch served in between.  Not the best music (Haydn's Creation) and not the best hour, but not bad when I consider that we both got $$ and toffee out of the deal.
Once we got home, this happened in my house:
I bought this Young Chang off of Craigslist on Friday and got a piano mover to move it here today.

Here's the long version of that story:
I had "play-tested" it a week or two ago because it was close by and I was curious.  I was in the market for an upright piano and was reading about how to discern the good from the bad.  It seemed like a great start to apply what I had learned and go see if I could find anything wrong with the piano.
While there, I learned that the owners had the piano for 30 years but hardly used it.  They were moving from a huge house to a small apartment on the island and weren't going to be able to keep the piano.  It looked pristine and sounded great.  I really couldn't find anything wrong with it other than it hadn't been tuned in over a year.  Even so, it's tuning seemed stable.
I had just sold my electric keyboard and amp setup for $2000 in the hopes of someday finding a nice upright grand for less than that.  The owners wanted $4500 for theirs, so there was no temptation to make any offers that far out of my range.  Also, Harlan had reservations against an upright piano in the house, so I figured a grand was completely off the table.
I told the owner that I really liked their piano and would ask around if friends were looking to buy a nice grand if it seemed my husband wouldn't go for it (which I knew he wouldn't).  I really wanted it to go to someone who would really benefit from it.  And I kept telling myself it was too much instrument for us anyway.
As time goes by and I try out a few other upright pianos that sounded uninspiring or yucky, none of my friends expressed interest in buying a grand either.  I kept feeling bad for that sweet baby grand and telling myself that it would take up too much space and be too fancy for us.  Then I saw on Craigslist that the owner dropped the price to $2500.  After talking it over with Harlan, I ask if they'll take $2000 for it.  They said that they were having it donated for a tax deduction the next day but I could have it if I could have it moved by Tuesday, when their house closes.  And just like that, we bought a baby grand!

Once the piano was set up, I had about an hour or so before I had to leave for a really cool musical, celtic legend gig where they paid me $$ and gave me flowers!

Seeing the kids and Harlan taking turns on the piano was like watching growing boys delight in eating vegetables.  My heart is full.  I think we're all in love with this new instrument.  When I came home from my gig, Harlan and I took turns playing all night.

Me: You don't want to know what time it is.  You're having too much fun.
Harlan: Why, is it 1am?
Me: Almost.
Harlan: Really?  What time is it?
Me: 12:40am.
Harlan: Oh my!
Me: We should probably go to bed.
Harlan: But I only have a page and a half left to finish this piano book.

The Best Day.

Mid-Move After-Photos

Here's a walkthrough of the goings on.  Real people live here.  We have towels that aren't perfectly folded and shampoo in the shower.  Our kids don't make their beds all the time, but it's home.

Little things still to be done here and there on the house (a missing vent cover, a piece of granite for the wall behind the stove, an outlet that doesn't work, a solution to venting the dryer, touch ups, etc).
In the midst of doing our taxes and jobs and parenting, we're moving leftover stuff from Seatac as we can, cleaning it for a near-future house listing, and figuring out where everything should go and where things are when we need them.  It's a lot of work to do, but we've done a lot of work already and survived it, so we'll get there.
Meanwhile, the kids think their rooms are awesome, and we like being here.

Lingering Guilt

Joel finally got up the guts to tell me about the time he peed on the carpet in the corner of his room.  He did it a couple of years ago to spite me for giving him a timeout.  I hadn't read anywhere in the parenting books how to handle that one so the only thing I could say was, "I'll show you how to clean that up on Saturday."  I should take the books back for a refund.

Dining Room

The trim is almost in the dining room.  It's looking lovely!!
 I just liked the laser!
 OK, now, it's done.
We flipped the door so that it will swing open into the dining room now.  We also had to move the wall switches over to the kitchen-side so that the door wouldn't block access to the light switches.

Saturday's Work

I found tile, luckily, on Friday.  It's a long story, really.  (Thanks, Mom, for listening!)  I learned that "high-end" tile generally gets ordered 4-6 weeks out.  Bob had been warning me that it was time to do the backsplash, hence a mad Facebook blitz for advice on what to put in there.  Deciding was hard.  The luck part was that some high-end tile that fit perfectly was discontinued in some warehouse and waiting for someone to want it for cheap or free and I was in the right place at the right time to get it!   (Oddly, I stumbled into some tile at HD too that was $.01/sf, too!  I think I may have found my superpower!)
I bought this tile on Friday and Bob got right down to installing it Saturday.
The color is almost exactly the same as the paint on the wall.  A perfect contrast, in my opinion.
The warehouse had a couple of boxes of bullnose to match that wasn't in their inventory, so I could have it for free.  This serendipitously solved our problem of what to do around the unfinished edges.
While Bob worked on tile, I painted these shelves that we'll put on the wall in the kids' rooms with the paint we're using for all the trim and baseboards.  Took longer than I thought it would, of course.  But hopefully I did a good job on the first coat so that the second coat will be much easier.

Bathroom

I was worrying about the bathroom: the paint, and how the cabinets looked in there with the dark countertops.  Now that the tile is in place, I'm liking it all so much more.  It's amazing how the tile really pulls things together.
I'm also proud of the choice of quarter round tile on the niche edges.  It was going to be framed by the 3x12s that we're using around the floor and sides but this looks so much better in the shower.  Yay!
