Joel had Soccer Camp this week. Or rather, Joel was at Soccer Camp. The other kids were playing soccer. Not sure what Joel did. But he had fun. And he came home tired. Mission sortof accomplished.

Asked why he wasn't participating, Joel's just answered "I don't know" :-)
I'm willing to bet Joel was being Joel, meaning that he would first observe, analyze, and process what the others were doing. Then, and only then, would he be ready to take the plunge, but not a minute before he'd adequately completed this important first stuff!
